 The History of 'Poon Choi'
'Poon Choi' originated about 600 years ago. It was said that 'Poon Choi' was invented during the late Song Dynasty. When Mongol troops invaded Song China, the young Emperor fled to the area around Guangdong Province and Hong Kong. To serve the Emperor as well as his army, the locals collected all their best food available, cooked it, and because there were not enough containers, put the resulting dishes in wooden washbasins. In this way, 'Poon Choi' was invented. |
The History of the Wishing Tree Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree was built during the era of the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1912). For over a century, people made wishes by writing on "Treasure Plates", each attached to an orange, that are tossed up to the branches. If a Treasure Plate successfully hangs onto one of the tree branches, it is believed that the wish would come true. Overtime, the branches of the Wishing Tree broke off due to the overloading of Treasure Plates. As a result, in February 2005 a replica of the tree was introduced nearby. Now it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Hong Kong. |
